In the passage above, the New Testament let us know that God send rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous. Why is this?

Why doesn’t God just send rain only to the righteous and let the wicked suffer and its plants to die? In this content, I will be discussing why God sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous. Why Does the Lord Send Rain on All?  is for the sake of human to be convicted for their sins.

1. The Significance of Rain

To understand Jesus’ statement in Matthew 5:45, we have to assimilate the context of the verse. When He spoke of sending rain on the righteous and the unrighteous, He is giving His Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus teaching on the Mount is one of the one amongst the significant lessons He taught His disciples about the right way to live as Christians. How to love God’s creation and God himself. In the verses prior to Matthew 5:45, Jesus is talking about loving your enemies.

The Lord says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:43-45).

2. Know Christ’s teaching

In this verses, Jesus is teaching us how to love our enemies to show the kind of love He has on us. God loves His creation and that’s why there’s always great joy in heaven when one of His creations turns to Him. The Lord sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous because He loves them both.

During the time Jesus was on earth, the society He was in was an agrarian culture. An agrarian culture means the society was focused on farming and producing crops. For the crops to grow and bear good fruits, it needs rain.

Therefore, when Jesus is said about sending rain on the righteous and the unrighteous, it means that God is going to provide food, life, and will make the crops of both the righteous and the unrighteous.

This would have been radical teaching to the people of Israel because they would have understood its meaning. Most were expecting to hear that God will punish the unrighteous by not making their plants yield or sending rain on them. Rather, allowing only who are righteous to flourish.

Jesus telling His disciples that God will flourish the plants of the wicked and of the righteous by sending rain on them must have shocked His followers.

Yes, it will shock them to hear that God will bless the wicked. They’re expecting that as a God, He would have blessed His people only and let the wicked suffer to envy the righteous.

Jesus was teaching something radically different by telling them that God loves the righteous and the unrighteous equally. Such as we were before we encountered Christ. And believed in Him. We are not righteous by what we do, but by through Christ Jesus.

3. God Provides for Everyone

The Lord sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous because He provides for everyone. Just as God provides food for wild animals, He equally provides rain for all His creatures. Which in turn let’s their planted crops to grow and bear good seeds.

God provides for all people because He loves all people and desires for them to know Him (1Timothy 2:3-4). The Lord loves all people, even those who do not follow Him.

We could see how God loves His creation and never wishes any to suffer. No one in earth can show you love than God. Even when you’re a sinner, God comes after you to minister to your soul to repent.
Lord loves His creations unconditionally.

And wants to see that you receive life and receive it abundantly. No matter how filthy our garment is, God is still calling us today to come to Him. He will wash and cleans us with His blood. God’s love for us is immeasurable and a love that’s beyond mother and her child. Heavenly love.

His love is forever with us. That’s why He sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous —because He loves everyone. God’s great love for us is so strong that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins.

4. Christ’s dead is for all

Jesus died on the cross in order to restore our broken relationship with the Father. John 3:16-17 tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
If God could love us to the extent of sending His only begotten son to die for our sins. Then, who is it on earth that God won’t love?

Remember, Jesus died for both the righteous and the sinners. He said, I came to rescue those who have gone astray. Therefore, God gives much care to the lost sheep and wants to see they found their way back to Him.

God does not discriminate on who to bless. He created man equally and loves us equally. He wants us to recognize that. We are all humans wonderfully created by our Creator (Psalm 139:13-16). The Lord does not withhold His providence and love from anyone.

5. Loving Our Enemies

A crucial part of this passage of Matthew 5:44-45 includes Jesus’ command to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.

This can be hard to do especially when someone is mean to us or bullies us. Even if someone is mean to us, we still need to forgive them (Ephesians 4:32).

By forgiven those who has sinned against us. It doesn’t mean we have forgotten what they did to us. But, we have handed their wrong to us until God and forgive then in our own part. As Christians, we should not really have any enemies.

We should only view others as our friends and brothers and sisters in Christ. It is not right to hate others in our hearts or to label them as our enemies. Jesus teaches us that even if a person is mean to us, we should extend His love and pray for them (Matthew 5:44-45).

When we love our neighbors, and pray for those who wronged us. We are exhibiting the life of a true Christian. The life of God.

Just as the Lord sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous, we should love and show care to those in our congregation and those if not our congregation. When blessing our church members, let’s bless the unbelievers also.

6. Christ’s love

By sharing Jesus’ love with unbelievers, it would help them to know Christ and accept Him as their Lord and Savior. As Christians, we should always be striving to follow Jesus and to do what He commands.

There is no place for envy, hate, or sabotage. Instead, we will be eager to live as Christ. Extending God’s love to the entire world as we could. If God should bless both the wicked and the righteous with rain, we should also reflect God’s love as Christians by extending our love to the believers and unbelievers.

Practicing this at first is never easy. But by prayer and supplication, God will give us the heart to do His will. We can start by praying for those who wronged us, those who hurt us. By so doing, God will grant you a soft heart to love your enemy.

Once we start praying for them and try to see things from their perspective, the better we will become at loving others with help from the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, the Lord sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous because of His love for them. God does not show favoritism because He loves all people the same.

Whether a person has accepted Him or not, the Lord will continue to send rain on all people in order for them to have food, crops, and clean water.
